Arctic Bay is a small, traditional community found on the northwest coast of Baffin Island. It is surrounded by the gravel beaches on Adams Sound and is inhabited by nomadic arctic peoples. These Inuktitut people named the Bay "Ikpiarjuk" or "the pocket," because the site is protected by hills on three of its sides. The sheltered area allows for many species of Arctic birds to nest in the area, and the surrounding waters make a home for narwhals and bowhead whales. Travelers to Arctic Bay should be sure to spend time exploring the community for the chance to sample local cuisines, meet artists, and browse the handicrafts made there. Hiking, camping, fishing, and yachting are just a few of the popular activities for the area, and each spring there are traditional Inuit games and community feasts that occur alongside the annual dog sledding race.
