Barro Colorado is a refuge for nearly 50% of wildlife reported in Panama, and is home to 115 mammal species with similarly impressive botanical wealth. The island is located in Gatun Lake on the Panama Canal. It is a hot spot for ecological research and was claimed as a nature reserve in 1923, along with five adjacent peninsulas to make up the Barro Colorado Nature Monument. While access to the island is regulated, visitors are welcome to take part in guided tours with the opportunity to see several of the resident wildlife along the way.
