Lewis is the northern, less mountainous part of Lewis and Harris, the largest island of the Outer Hebrides. The area is a peat-covered plateau with sandy beaches and dunes on the east coast, and rocky cliffs on the west coast. The Callanish Stones, one of the most striking archaeological landmarks in the area, were constructed on the west coast of the island between 2900 and 2600 BC.
