Liepaja is located on the western side of Latvia on the Baltic Sea. Sea-bathers interested in the elegant gardens and theaters have been frequenting the area since the 19th century. Because it has been established for hundreds of years, Liepaja has buildings with varying architectural styles, including wooden houses, Art Nouveau buildings, and Soviet-era apartments. The city center houses many ancient buildings and a former secret military encampment which now has tours held throughout the year. The natural scenery includes long white sandy beaches, lakes, and gardens.
