Monumental Island was named by Arctic explorer Charles Francis Hall as in memory of Sir John Franklin, who died in his quest to find the Northwest Passage. The island lies in the Davis Strait off Baffin Island. Black Guillemots dive for fish around the shoreline. Walrus colonies may be visible on the beach, and depending on the season polar bears might appear as well.
