The largest island in Cape Verde, Santiago preserves a grand collection of ancient buildings in the capital town of Praia. The colonial town center is the hub of a four-century history, complete with an archaeology museum. Just west of Praia is Cadade Velha, the original Portuguese settlement once known as Ribeira Grande, the first city established in the region.
